Comparative Study Traces the Didactic Tale of “Breaking the Sticks” in Arabic and Persian Literature

Arabic and Persian Literature

A recent study by Dr. Seyed Mohammadreza Ibn al-Rasoul, Professor of Arabic Language and Literature, and Dr. Somayeh Hasanalian, Associate Professor at the University of Isfahan, examines the origins and development of a well-known didactic narrative shared across Arabic and Persian literary traditions.

The research focuses on the allegorical story often referred to as “Breaking the Sticks,” a moral tale emphasizing unity and solidarity, typically illustrated through a father’s advice to his children. This narrative, preserved in both prose and verse, has long been a recurring motif in educational and ethical literature.

Adopting a comparative and structural approach, the study analyzes various versions of the story in Arabic and Persian sources to determine their degree of fidelity to the earliest known accounts. The authors investigate both similarities and differences in narrative structure, thematic emphasis, and stylistic features across the two traditions.

The findings reveal that, despite variations in form and expression, the central message—advocating unity over division—remains consistent in all versions. The study identifies early key sources of the narrative, including Wasāyā al-Mulūk in Arabic literature and Rāḥat al-Ṣudūr in Persian literature, highlighting their role in transmitting the story across time and cultures.

This research contributes to the field of comparative literature by demonstrating how a single moral narrative can persist and evolve across linguistic and cultural boundaries while maintaining its core didactic function. It also underscores the importance of shared storytelling traditions in shaping ethical discourse in both Arabic and Persian literary heritage.
