The Faculty of Foreign Languages at the University of Isfahan is a dynamic academic hub dedicated to teaching, research, and intercultural communication across multiple linguistic traditions.

Overview

The Faculty of Foreign Languages at the University of Isfahan was established as an independent faculty in 1974 and has since grown into one of the university’s most dynamic academic communities. Bringing together a rich diversity of languages, literatures, translation studies, and linguistics, the faculty offers a strong intellectual environment for teaching, research, and cultural engagement. Its departments reflect both deep historical roots and expanding academic horizons, making the faculty a central hub for language education in Iran.

The oldest academic unit in the faculty is the Department of English Language and Literature, established in 1958, followed by the French and Armenian programs in 1959 and 1960, and the Arabic program in 1962. Over time, the faculty expanded to include German in 1994, Linguistics as an independent department in 2006, Chinese in 2013, and Russian in 2018. This long and diverse academic trajectory demonstrates the faculty’s continued commitment to international languages and scholarly excellence.

A distinctive feature of the faculty is its Language Learning Center, established in 1974 and officially recognized in 1999, which serves not only the university community but also the wider public through language education, translation, editing, workshops, test preparation, and specialized counseling services.

The Faculty of Foreign Languages also places strong emphasis on research. Faculty members across the departments contribute expertise in areas such as English and Arabic literature, translation studies, applied linguistics, TEFL, phonetics, phonology, syntax, semantics, morphology, discourse analysis, sociolinguistics, cognitive linguistics, typology, computational linguistics, and natural language processing.

Collaboration with other university units, including computer science and artificial intelligence, further strengthens the faculty’s research capacity and expands opportunities in areas such as machine translation and language technology.

As a whole, the Faculty of Foreign Languages reflects a strong balance between tradition and innovation. It preserves the legacy of some of the university’s oldest academic programs while continuously adapting to new educational and research needs.

Through its departments, language center, faculty expertise, and academic programs, the faculty continues to serve as a leading institution for language education, scholarship, and intercultural communication.
