Department of Linguistics

History & Overview
The Department of Linguistics has one of the strongest academic profiles within the Faculty of Foreign Languages. Originally established as part of the Department of Persian Language and Literature, it became an independent department in 2006, reflecting the growing importance of linguistic research in both theoretical and applied domains. The department was among the first academic units in Iran to establish Linguistics as an independent field of study and has played a pioneering role in advancing graduate education and research in the discipline. Today, the department serves as a leading center for linguistic scholarship, offering advanced education and research opportunities in a wide range of linguistic subfields. The department offers MA programs in Pure Linguistics and Teaching Persian to Speakers of Other Languages (TPSOL), as well as a PhD program in Linguistics. Through these programs, students engage with contemporary linguistic theory, empirical research methodologies, and interdisciplinary approaches to language study.
